Atonement by Ian McEwan Review: A child sees something between adults which she misunderstands, with catastrophic results. Lives are changed as a result. This is a great dramatic premise for a novel and McEwan explores it brilliantly. His use of language makes the whole thing a pleasure and the pace is perfect - but not so the ending - the sole reason for giving this book 4 and not 5 stars.
Review: After fifty or so pages, I thought this book would join the very select list of those I could not finish (which includes Catch 22 and One Hundred Years of Solitude!). Gradually, I became accustomed to the fact that this book, unlike almost all, is NOT about actions and deeds, but about thoughts. McEwan uses the opening section to establish the fantasy world in which Briony lives, so that the (false) accusation of rape against Robbie that she inspires seems entirely plausible. This is an exceptional novel by an accomplished author.
Review: Sorry haven't read this yet. Keeping it for my hols so hopefully it deserves 5 stars
Review: A truly gripping story as you would expect from a Booker Prize contestant and winner. No wonder the story was made into an equally gripping film.
Review: This book was in really good condition, although it was supposed to have been used it was like new. Really pleased.
